Can AI Art Ever Replace Human Artistic Expression?

What happened on ArtStation and AI?

Artists have been raising concerns about AI stealing their art. This has been some unrest for awhile but really escalated in the beginning of December. Many artists began to protest more publicly and flooded ArtStation with anti-AI-art. For a couple weeks, all that could be seen on ArtStation was the same anti-AI-art. As ArtStation remained oddly quiet, the protesting increased. Some began to talk about canceling their subscriptions. On December 16, ArtStation released an update that gave a “NoAI” tag. This tag “empowers you to clarify that regardless of the state of copyright law, use of your work in AI is not permitted”.

Why are Artists Upset About AI Art

There are many different reasons why some artists may be upset about AI art.

  • Some artists may feel that AI art threatens their livelihood or diminishes the value of human-created art. They may be concerned that AI will eventually be able to replace human artists, leading to job loss and a devaluation of the artistic profession.
  • Some artists may feel that AI art lacks the creativity and originality of human-created art. They may argue that AI can only produce work based on the data it has been trained on, and because of this, cannot truly be creative in the same way that humans can.
  • Some artists may be uncomfortable with the idea of AI being involved in the creative process at all. They may feel that art should be purely a human effort, and that the use of AI takes away from the authenticity of the work.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to note that not all artists feel this way about AI art. There are many artists who are excited about the potential of using AI in their workflow. As with any new technology, there is often a range of opinions and perspectives.
